Baker Mayfield was the #1 overall pick in the NFL college draft this past spring. Last night we got to see why as the Cleveland Browns won their first game since 2016.
The 21-17 victory over the stunned NY Jets set off a wild celebration that was almost reminiscent of a title victory throughout the sad sack city.
The Jets let a 14-0 first half lead slip away. Two rushing touchdowns by Isaiah Crowell kicked off the game’s scoring, the second of which was followed by a crude obscene gesture by Crowell which cost the Jets 15 yards after the kickoff. It was soon after that Browns starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor got injured and in came the rookie. Everything turned at that point as up until then the NY defense was dominant and the crowd serenaded the Browns with boos and cat calls for “BAKER”.
It was apparent immediately that Mayfield had the goods and the charisma to end the longest winless streak in NFL history. He led the Browns to a field goal just before the half ended to make it 14-3.
After another field goal led drive mid way through the 3rd Mayfield then drove Cleveland to a touchdown, followed by a 2-point conversion which was a trick play culminating in Mayfield catching the tying score to complete the 2 point play.
The Jets went ahead in the 4th 17-14 but the Browns would not be denied on this night. Another impressive drive led by the rookie gave Cleveland a 21-17 lead as Carlos Hyde took in his 2nd rushing touchdown of the night.
The drama built through the final few minutes as twice the Brown defense stopped Jets fellow rookie and 1st round pick Sam Darnold and the Jets from gaining much of any offense. Two interceptions ended both New York drives and the final one ended the game as the victory starved Cleveland fans erupted with cheers as the Browns finally after almost 2 years won a football game.
