Our last episode of wine and vacation paring adventures is on our own homeland right here in the USA; Asheville, North Carolina.

Our trek around the world has taken us from rich Burgundy, France to chilly New Zealand and even down under to Sydney, Australia, but we will complete the series at home in the United States.

The Blue Mountains and foothills of the region have it all from the highest peaks east of the Mississippi River to the most visited winery in the country. This mountain city offers eclectic fun, arts, and outdoor adventures fit for a king, and don’t forget some good old American style fun with Hollywood connections and off-roading adventures.

Rich in reds, Asheville and the surrounding mountain wine region includes roughly 20 vineyards and offers some of the best Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc. Look close and you can even spot a Viognier in the area!

Wine and Vacation Paring Series 6 of 6: Asheville, North Carolina

Visit award winning locations such as Burntshirt Vineyards where 80 years of experience and dedication have provided some of the highest quality grapes grown in the area. Their lands are cleared regularly by burning to provide the best terrestrial foundations for vine growing, improved upon by their namesake tradition of throwing your shirt in for good luck. Enjoy Burntshirt’s sweet rose blends, premium Riesling and Merlot, and some amazing reserve wines that will take your breath away as you gaze upon some of the most beautiful views.

Asheville, North Carolina is a short drive to Great Smokey Mountains National Park, or consider a trek to Chimney Rock for panoramic views spanning 75 miles. Walk across the highest suspension footbridge at Grandfather Mountain – The Mile High Swinging Bridge or simply drive along Blue Ridge Parkway for stunning foliage views in the fall.

Explore the many waterfalls of Transylvania County or simply enjoy the Belgian inspired ales at the local taproom. Did we mention there are local apple inspired meaderies to fill your cup such as the Noble Cider too?

Between the popular River Arts District and the myriad of outdoor activities you’ll be overwhelmed with what to do next! The Biltmore

The pièce de résistance – The Biltmore. This opulent estate belonging to one of America’s most beloved families the Vanderbilt’s, has stood as one of the largest residential undertakings of the century. With 250 rooms and over four acres of floor space the Vanderbilt home includes 35 bedrooms, 43 bathrooms and 65 fireplaces. In French Renaissance style this massive home took six years to complete and stands today as an extraordinary piece of architecture visited by millions of tourists and contributing so much more to the region than just a history lesson.

Offering some of the most satisfying assortments you could imbibe; the exclusive Biltmore Estate Wine Company prides itself with breathtaking vineyards and offers guests the opportunity to tour the areas of production as you embark on the journey over the river from the main house. The winery wouldn’t exist without the efforts of George Vanderbilt’s grandson William Cecil. With a first year failure Mr. Cecil sought out the advice of expert winemakers and moved his entire production to the west side of the estate and expanded it to a luscious 150 acres of vinifera grapes and recruited the help of a 6th generation French winemaster, Philippe Jourdain.
