Both come from rough neighborhoods and both have come to conquer. The California Kids, James Harden and Russell Westbrook are making waves in the NBA. Russell Westbrook who was born November 12th 1988, attended Leuzinger High School in Lawdale California. The fierce point guard was scouted and went on to attend UCLA from 2006-2008. Russell was drafted 4th overall in the 2008 NBA draft by the Seattle Supersonics. He grew up in Los Angeles, California in a gang riddled area. Russell’s parents kept him away from the dangers of the streets by keeping him involved and active in sports. Russell flourished at UCLA and went on to do the same in the NBA as he stood aside Kevin Durant and James Harden.
James Harden is also a “California Kid”. Harden was born August 26 1989 in Los Angeles as well where The Beard played basketball at Atresia High School in Lakewood California. Harden automatically showed his start qualities at Artesia and was recruited by Arizona State which he also attended from 2007-2009. The big time baller James Harden was drafted 3rd overall in the NBA draft after making statements at Arizona State. James was drafted by the Oklahoma City Thunder, who were formerly known as the Seattle Supersonics. Harden showered his abilities with the Thunder and was traded to the Houston Rockets in 2012. The summer before the 2017 season Hardens position was Changed to point guard and his game blossomed at the position to the point where he lead the league in assists and lead his team to the playoffs as the 3rd seed and is a MVP candidate.
Russell Westbrook is also a MVP candidate this year after leading his team to the playoffs as the #6 seed and breaking 11 records along the way including Oscar Robertson’s record for triple doubles in a season with 42. Russell Westbrook’s Thunder are facing head to head against James Harden’s Rockets. The series is 2-1 with the rockets leading the way, who will win the series? Who will win MVP? We don’t know as of now but we do know it will be a California Kid.
